The Fake Conference is a standardized scam 'format'. Attendance involves registration expenses, sponsorship 'opportunities' and so on. The expenses are the scam; the conference, even if not imaginary, is one with which the scammer is unconnected. As such, it shares a common modus operandi with similar scam formats such as Dead Bank Customer and Lottery Win.

Miss Lisa Smith from The World Vision International USA. Paragraph markings were apparently in short supply. World Vision International exists. It is a Christian relief agency, an "NGO". This scammer is not actually "Lisa Smith" , and is unconnected with World Vision International. He is lying. He is a scammer. Got that? Can we go on now? Good. Lonslo Tossov
Subject: To Miss Smith Dear Miss Smith I do not understand. Is this an enquiry about work placement? Have you spoken to our HR Manager Mr Seymour Puttox? He is really the first port of call for interns and the like. You are a little behind in regards to this year's intake (and will need a visa I would suggest). From your brief CV I would suggest trying for our corporate comms side of things, but you will need neat handwriting and good filing habits.

Undeterred by this 'reporter's' inability to spell words the same way twice, Tossov reponds eagerly.
Subject: To Lisa Smith Dear Ms Smith Many thanks for your message and the photographs attached. I must say you seem a very presentable young woman. I can see that I misunderstood your initial message for which I apologies, so no need to look to Seymour Puttox now. I do have regular business in the Americas as it happens and so perhaps something can be worked out. However I am not sure exactly what is being asked of me. Do I have to make a donation or take out a member subscription to your organisation? Is this a full time thing or can I work it in with my often onerous duties here. While I am keen to see your charity gets what is surely coming to it, I would not want to take on obligations that I cannot easily fulfil. I must admit though I would enjoy a spot of recreational camping, such as you mention. I have not done such a thing for pleasure since I was dressed as a pink banana for the 2005 carnival in Rio, this merriment as part of a light-hearted promotional tour for our gilt-edged securities offering. It was quite an experience I can tell you but I did secure quite a few contacts in the back office. Anyway, what more can you tell me? TOSSOV Lisa Smith

Date: November 20, 2012 Dear Lisa I am not sure who Mr Jenkins is, or why I should contact him? Won't that spoil our beautiful friendship? I copy him in with this message to be polite, but I am very confused now. Anyhow to show I am sincere and trustworthy I attach my pic. I must admit that I have looked at your pictures several times and find you very attractive. I am sure we will get along well once all these crossed wires are sorted out. As I said before, I can travel to the Americas if I have to, will it be possible to meet up for a chat? LONSLO Kevin Jenkins (NOT)!)
In standard Lad m.o., the intended victim (Tossov) is exhorted to contact a separate Lad for the actual money transfer. There will be paperwork. It will cost him. Again, paragraphs came dear. ... and the request for money comes early (see the highlighted portion...

Date: November 27, 2012 Dear Sir I don't think this is for me. There would be too few in my party, unless I bumped up the numbers with some waterboys or camp followers. That's OK for a safari down coast to Smegaroon but not ideal here. Also I am not sure if many of the natives here have passports or would even benefit from this sort of thing. We have enough trouble finding anyone with brains enough to pour out the gin in the boardroom without spills and pilfering or to caddy. Are there not other arrangements we can make? Tossov
