JUAN GOOD TURN DESERVES ANOTHER

updated nov 19

Juan Perez returns to face Jacob Ashawo, another Barrister from the Barrister factory.

Good day and greetings of the season. This may come as a surprise to you... oh, never mind.

I wonder if there is a clam too outrageous for these guys, but looks like the sky is the limit.
Here I got a lad who cannot keep track of his own email addresses, and some valuable family heirlooms.
Still going, I'll try to carry it as far as possible.

Dear Mr Ashawo,

I am a bit surprised that you managed to find me, as well as the fact that I am an Elbonian citizen. That information was not publicly available, as far as I knew. Did you go to the consulate homepage by any chance? I am just curious.

In any case, I am glad that you contacted me. Your proposal sounds interesting. However, as a retired businessman, I have learned to be a bit cautious. Please send me more information about this business and the modalities that you must have perfected by now.

Sincerely,

Juan Perez Munoz de Baratta Tudela Loveday

Subject: Good day

Dear Partner,
Thanks for your urgent response to my mail.I really appreciate it.It really gives me the impression that i have found the right partner.

I wonder if you have ever been in a joint venture business with someone.if you have , you will agree with me that unless both parties involved work in perfect harmony and rhythm, the joint venture would fail. And to achieve this rhythm requires mutual trust.

I am a very respectable lawyer working in the most important sector of my nation's economy. There's no way i'm going to involve myself in this kind of deal with the 100% chance of success.

There no way i can retrieve the money from the security company or the local bank either without the assistance of a trusted foreign partner. So i am willing to develop a mutually beneficial and financial relationship with you.

Let me give you a little briefing of the entire set up.I am the lawyer of the deceased.i have a copy of the will made by the deceased some years before his death, then he was still single. i intend to falsify this will in your favor [yeh there's someone you can trust],to reflect you as the NEXT OF KIN. The security company has already notified me that as soon as the NEXT OF KIN is produced. The consignment belonging to the deceased would be released onto the NEXT OF KIN which is consistent with their policy.

As for the money in the local bank.I believe this would even be more easier to collect. The N.N.P.C has directed the local bank to deposit the money in a suspended account in the Central bank of Nigeria. This has been done. The CBN has since been in search of the NEXT OF KIN of the deceased.

I have been invited to a meeting with some officials of the (CBN).I am supposed to introduce to them the NEXT OF KIN of the deceased. This is were you now come in. I will present you to them and will act as your lawyer to ensure the safe transfer of the funds into your nominated account.

Mr Juan Perez ,please let me know if i have your full cooperation on this venture. This is the path to my financial freedom which i have always dreamed about. If you are not 100% committed to this ,PLEASE BACK DOWN NOW....

I still have not decided to give you more info on the deceased, because we have not yet ascertained if we will be working together on this.

I would need scanned copies of an internationally acceptable ID from you like your drivers license or the photo page of your international passport.

you can reach me on my mobile phone; 234 804 210 2848

Please always send me email via this my yahoo email account as i seem to be having problems with me tiscali email due to poor Internet connection speed.

I look forward to your favorable response.

Best regards,

Barr. Jacob Ashawo

Dear Jacob,

Thanks for your trust. I agree with you, the only way to carry forward a successful partnership is to be able to trust the other party.

Please be assured that I will not disappoint you. I am an honest person, with very high moral standards.

This said, please go ahead and falsify the will in my favor. I will do whatever is in my power for this deal to succeed: 25% of the proceedings sounds like a very strong incentive.

One quick question before I commit myself fully: you mentioned introducing me to the CBN officials. Does this mean that I will need to travel to Nigeria? It is not a problem, but if that is the case, I should probably start by renewing my passport and making some travel arrangements.

Again, you have my full cooperation in this venture. I expect your response.

Sincerely,

Juan

JACOB ASHAWO

Date: Wed, 24 Sep 2003 03:20:23 -0700 (PDT) Subject: We proceed

Dear partner,
I have eagerly awaited your email and i'm glad you finally replied.
i do believe that we can proceed on this joint venture.
Before i proceed, i would want to put us on some form of codes, whenever i call you before i begin to speak on the transaction, i will ask you for a password which would be FULFILLMENT.
You too should do the same whenever you call. This is to avoid crossed lines due to poor communications network and to maintain a high level of security.
I would need your phone and fax numbers.
I would also need your personal data as in date of birth and place of birth.
this is to enable me prepare the WILL.Immediately the will is completed i will have it duly registered at the STATE PROBATE REGISTRY, in your name.
You might be required to come down to Nigeria to complete the transaction but i think that that is very unlikely because, I can legally represent you and have the money transfered to your nominated bank account.
I was suppose to hold a meeting at with the CBN officials today the 24th of sept. But the meeting had to be postponed. Currently i'm in an offshore facility.I'm out of the coverage area of my mobile phone operator and i'm rather reluctant to use any facility of the corporation other than email for this transaction.I will be back in Lagos by next week.By next week i will hold the meeting with the CBN officials when i get home.
After the meeting ( If all goes well, we would begin the transfer).
I don't see us having any problem with the security company.Their office is in the Netherlands and you would have to make arrangements to travel to the Netherlands.
Before i go.The name of the deceased is Mr Cleaves Brown.
I am still expecting the scanned copy of the international passport.I advise you renew your passport.I need the scanned copy really soon.so i know we are both fully committed to having this business succeed.
Please send me all the info i requested.

Best regards,

Dear Jacob,

I believe your code system is a great idea. We should implement it also whenever we email each other. From now on, we should include a reference code word in our messages. I suggest the word SUBLIMINABLE, which will identify them as legitimate emails.

Here is my personal information:

Juan Perez Munoz de Baratta Tudela Loveday
Birthdate: Dec 12, 1935
Place: NarvaHiiumaa Island, Elbonia

I mailed my passport to the consulate this morning in order to renew it. This proceeding can take two to three weeks, I hope this puts un within our timeframe. I will scan it and send to you as soon as I receive it, I did not think you would need an expired passport.

Cleaves Brown, you said? does not ring a bell. Brown is a pretty common Elbonian surname, though. Do you know by any chance what part of the country he was from?

Please let me know if there is anything else I can do at this point.

Sincerely,

Juan

Dear Jacob,

Sorry for the late response. I went to the consulate to get my passport and make a copy to send you, but they had already sent it to Elbonia for renewal. However, I am sending you my current drivers license, I hope it helps you.

I thought I mentioned this to you before, but I must have missed it: I cannot use phones now. I started losing my hearing when I turned 65, and now I am almost completely deaf. We will have to use email to communicate, which is more secure anyway.

Please go ahead and send me the documents, and do not hesitate to tell me if you need anything else.

Also, can you confirm whether or not I need to travel overseas, either to Nigeria or the Netherlands? I'd like to start making preparations right away.

Juan

My dear friend,
Thanks for your mail even though it came a little late.
I'm sorry to hear about your loss of hearing.
We shall proceed with the retrieval of the funds.
Are you willing to commence the retreival of both funds simultaneously?
I believe that you would have to travel to the netherlands first.Because the security company has already informed me that immediately the NEXT OF KIN surfaces the consignment containing the $25m.
I could not attend the meeting last week with the CBN officials. So i believe that before i would have attended a rescheduled meeting with them.

I strongly believe in the sucess of our joint venture. Please continue to keep this matter TOP SECRET. I'm still working on the will. I will send you all the documents soonest.

Dear Jacob,

I am a little bit concerned about your lack of commitment to this business. This is the second time you miss a critical appointment with the CBN officials. If you keep blowing them off, we may lose their cooperation, don't you think? Please reschedule it as soon as possible, and let me know what comes out of it.

As for the consignment, I am confused: how much money do we have? first you told me there was a balance of 12.5 million, and now you mention 25 million. Look, I am a honest person who plays by the rules, and I expect my partners to do the same thing. I will only do business with people I have full confidence in, and I thought I could trust you. Please do not betray me.

I am ready to travel as soon as I get my passport back. I will contact Morgan, but first I would like for you to clarify the amount of money involved. Also, how much does the security company know? do I tell them about the money or just refer to a consignment? I have never done anything like this before, so you will have to explain me the detailed modalities and guide me through the process. I know you'll be patient with an old man.

I look forward to your response,

Juan

Dear Friend & Partner,
Thanks for your mail.I can see from the emotions in your email that you are truly committed towards the success of this joint venture.

Thanks for your trust.i must say that if we both continue with this level of dedication and trust there is no way we shall fail. We shall indeed go beyond this initial phase of collecting the funds, We would actually leave a befitting legacy behind for our children & grandchildren to be proud of.

With all these said.I must quickly say that there seem to be a little misunderstanding between us.

If you could go through the first mail i sent to you you will find out that the consignment contains 25million United Stated dollars.(the 12.5 million must be a typographical error if it is actually so).

The bank balance of the late CLEAVES BROWN was $15.6m.

This is the true position of things which you will be able to ascertain for your self immediately you begin the withdrawal process.

As for the meeting with the CBN. Do not worry yourself. I had the meeting postponed only once and it was due to the fact i was in an offshore facility on official assignment. However i just returned to my office secretary informed that the meeting has been fixed for the 3rd of Oct.

Mr Juan,I'm pleased to have you as a partner, I will not let Us down.I have the connections to make sure everything goes smoothly. Do not be worried everything will go according to plan.

The draft copy of the will is ready. I intend to give it the necessary legal backing by having it registered at the STATE PROBATE REGISTRY.

for now we have to keep our fingers crossed as i attend the meeting with the CBN.I will let them know that you are the NEXT OF KIN.

Below is a copy of the mail which you should send to the security firm.

Dear Jacob,

The reason I have achieved my current position in the business world is precisely because I always give 110% of my effort and I commit myself to the maximum extent. That, and the money I inherited from my father, but I digress. The point is, even though I am retired now, I still will do whatever is necessary to make this a successful venture.

I accept your explanation of the current balance in the account. So, according to my calculations, I should receive 4.68 millions, is that correct?

I am glad that the meeting with the CBN has been rescheduled for today. I don't need to remind you of the importance of keeping me posted of any developments.

By the way, you forgot to send me Dr. Stenbite's personal email address. I need to know where to send the message!!! Apparently, I am not the only forgetful one here.

I would really appreciate if you sent me picture of yourself and your family, even if it is a SUBLIMINABLE one. I always try to build a personal relationship with my business partners, and this will certainly be a first step in that direction.

Dear Mr Perez,
I must say you have an interesting and imposing personality. I know this mail is coming rather late.I was waiting for my scanner to be replaced as the one in my office is faulty. I was about to send you a copy of the last group photo i had with my family. Any how by on monday, i would be able to have it fixed.

At this point i would suggest that we draw up a contract agreement and have it signed by both of us stating the agreed percentage. Remember that we share the money after all expenses incurred by both parties has been deducted.your share is 25% of any of the funds we retreive. We collect the fund from the security firm, you get 25%. we collect the fund form the bank you get 25%.

I will begin sending you the documents on monday.

The meeting with the CBN officials went well.I met with the directors who commended my efforts. i was advised to go to the local bank to pick up some document and official present them with the change of ownership for the accounts. The local bank would be attached their recommendations and send it to the CBN. who will now release the money to. The interesting thing is that one of their senior staff was appointed to assist me to conclude the paper work swiftly.that will commence on monday.

The mail i asked you to send to the Dr morgan was not a personal one.He is in charge of the general operations. Send it their email address. here it is again.

continentsecurities@yahoo.co.uk

Please do that immediately.

Do you have a fax number where i could send you some documents??? You never told me the kind of business you were into. I might need your expertise and advise on investing some of the money that comes to me. How often do you check your emails? I'm glad you are my partner. Lets put everything to full swing. According to Dr Ahmed one of the men i met at the meeting today, everthing could be done under ten working days and your trip to Nigeria could be avoided it is up to you. When will your passport be ready?

I will keep you posted.

Dear friend & partner,
Sorry for the temporal break in communication. I have not been able to access my email due to security reasons, i was part of the negotiating team between the federal govt. of Nigeria and the Nigerian labor congress. There was an impending strike action.
But thank God that is over, at least for now. The meeting had been deadlocked for days, during which time i was not able to access my email mainly as a security precaution.
I did not see the copy of the mail you sent to the security company until now.
I must say that i need to have my eyes or head examined because i only noticed that the email address of the security company is not correct. The correct email is :
continentsecurities2003@yahoo.co.uk

it seems i forget the 2003.
Please i know it seems stupid that i could make such a mistake but please take it easy.

I appreciate your sending me a copy of the mail, i would insist that you continue to do so.

The machinery in the local bank is already in motion.A staff of the CBN is working with me to expedite action.
we have a meeting tomorrow, that is when i will hand over to him the necessary paper work.
I will also send you the documents as soon as i can.

If i don't get a fax number from you, i would send them via email.

Hope you like the photo,
That was me, My wife Melissa and the kids.

I apologize for once again stalling the progress of our project.Lets not dwell on it but rather look forward to the successful conclusion.

The will has been duly registered, it cost me 350,000 naira ($2500 or there about).
But we can be rest assured that we would not have any problems as regards that.

I will always keep in touch.

Thanks for being there for me .

Dear Jacob,

I got a reply from someone named Rosewida, supposedly from Morgan's office, and who never learned how to spell.

She says the consignment is in "costody" with them, and to call the head of "Customer Servise" in order to have the "protocal officer" pick me at the airport.

More important, they require the sum of 14,560 "euroes" to settle some "dumorage" charges.

I am sure you must have accounted for these expenses, so please let me know what our provisions are. I remember you mapped 10% of the funds for expenses, so this will be a great time to use them.

They also need to know the deposit number. I don't believe you have given it to me yet.

My passport should be back by the end of this week. I will let you know as soon as I have it. Please email me the documents, since I do not have a secured and SUBLIMINABLE fax line yet, and I fear for the confidentiality of all related documents.

Dear friend & Partner,
Thanks for your email it was fully understood. You have all reasons to be mad at them. You have to continue negotitiations with the right person.

Mr Juan Perez, You earlier told me the you were retired from business and this i understand but i also thot that you were ready to get back into the action, when you decided to get into this joint venture.

I do not see why you cannot get a fax, that issue is raising eyebrow here.

you will have to do get ready to take the bull by the horn. Mr Juan, I have in the past commended you for your percieved dedication to this deal, i am by no means implying that you are not serious.

Definitely you know that we can afford to PAUSE now.

The 10% is from the money still being held in the respective institutions,

Down here i believe that i would be have to spend more that.make arrangements to pay the necessary fees, if the word "domorrage" means what i think, the cost will definitely increase i would insist at this point that you continue negotiations. i would send you the document via email soonest. Dont be worried, remember security is the watch word.

Dear Jacob,

You can raise as many eyebrows as you want, but I suggest you read carefully my message before making that type of comments. I never said I cannot get a fax. A fax machine costs 100 dollars, and can be plugged into any phone line. What I said is that I do not have a SECURED fax line yet. I cannot just risk leaving confidential faxes laying around fo anybody to read. For that reason, I insist that you email me the documents, since nobody but me has access to this email account. Any questions?

You still have not answered my question: how are we going to get the money for the demurrage (by the way, that is the correct word) charges? Unless you have already thought a way to raise that amount, we will have to pull our resources together. I am open to suggestions. Like you said, nobody can accuse me of not being serious and commited to this business.

I will answer the securities company as soon as I hear what you have to say.

Dear Jacob,

This is a big change in our plans. I have given this new development a lot of thought, and I have good news and bad news for you, and bad news for your associates.

The good news is, I may be able to raise most of the required amount, perhaps the whole sum. My family owns some very valuable old paintings, including the only existing copy of the Mona Lisa, and I can probably borrow some money out of them.

The bad news for us is, I will have to travel to Elbonia to make the arrangements, and this will delay our business for a couple of weeks. I need to find a suitable investor, contact the Louvre and tell them the bad news, and go to Amsterdam from there.

Tha bad news for your partners is: this will cost money. Since I am now financing the operation, I will expect a higher part of the funds. I require my participation to increase to 40%. Discuss this with them.

Please let me know your decision as soon as possible. According to the consulate, my passport has already been sent back, and I should receive it on Monday. If you agree to my conditions, I will start making travel arrangements right away.

Looking forward to your SUBLIMINABLE response,

Juan

Dear Jacob,

First, you have impressed me, which is not easy. I did not realize you were pulling this off all by yourself, I thought the people from the CBN were on the business. Congratulations.

I am not an unreasonable man, but I always get a reasonable return for risking my money or, like in this case, some valuable family heirlooms. My relatives would be very disappointed if I lost the Mona Lisa, which has been in the family for many generations.

I probably should not do this, but I like you. As a show of good faith, I am lowering my requirement to 35% of the proceedings. This is not negotiable: take it or leave it. I live in a comfortable retirement right now, and will only go into a new venture if I think the reward is worthwhile. That is my final word about it. Since you are the only other party involved, the decision is entirely yours.

I am ready to travel. Let me know if you are in, so I can proceed in the most SUBLIMINABLE way.

Sorry for the late response, but some personal affairs prevented me from getting back to you sooner.

I sent an email to the securities company, reestablishing contact and asking them to expect news from me soon. As always, you should have receivd a copy.

As you know, I am going to Elbonia next week in order to finalize the details you already know about. I am going to see my travel agent this morning to get the tickets right away.

I feel now much more comfortable with this whole situation. Tell me, do you have plans to stay in Nigeria when this deal is over? are you planning to come to the States? I'd love to receive you and your wonderful family, even if it is for a short or SUBLIMINABLE visit.
