DUDE, WHERE'S MY LAPTOP

I am a foreign contractor working in Nigeria. I came across 419 here and the art of scambaiting.

As there is not too much to do here I decide to put my many hours of spare time to the purposes of good over evil and to use a little inside knowledge to the best of my advantage. As I am about to go back home and have my time occupied elsewhere, this is probably my first and last successful scambait. I have informed others of this wonderful pastime for those I leave behind.

Kevin Nworah contacts me from Lagos, Nigeria to tell me one of his clients died in a motor accident and that I (incorrectly) have the same last name as him and that he wants to present me as the next of kin in order to collect 42 million dollars.

SCAMMER NAME: Kevin Nworah Orah - SCAMMER LOCATION: Lagos, Nigeria - PROFIT: N5000 (about $35) scammed

SCAMBAITER: Michael Dell
SCAMBAITER SECRETARY: Mrs. Walker
SCAMBAITER SHIPPING MANAGER: Abraham Buba
SCAMBAITER SHIPPING ASSISTANT: Peter

[Editorial note: The secretary's original name was not Mrs. Walker. It was a name which, as in many scam-o-grams we receive, suggests that secretaries are dumb, happy with their career choices, and easy. We've been increasingly restive about these names, having worked various menial jobs ourselves. But how to handle it?

We decided to - edit! She has been renamed after a character from the novel "Moo" by Jane Smiley. Smiley's Mrs. Walker works for a university provost, and in fact runs everything. She is not particularly nice - in fact she's diabolical - but she's no fool. From now on, secretaries we want to rename will be called Mrs. Walker, or possibly Morgan LeFay.
And now back to our regularly scheduled scam.]

Compliment,

I was privileged to capture your names from the Internet. My name is Barr.kevin Nworah, a legal practitioner and the personal Attorney to late Mr.Adams, a national of your country who died along with his wife and his Two sons in a ghastly motor accident along Sagamu express road Ibadan, over 4 years now (August 13, 1999).All the occupants in the vehicle lost their lives.

I am convinced that it was the grace of God that made me to locate you. my client was a successful and am accomplished family man, who made enough fortune before his untimely death.Since then I had made several inquiries through your Embassy to locate any of my clients extended relative but this exercise has proved unsuccessful. After several unsuccessful attempts, I decided to trace his relatives through the Internet, to locate any member of his family not much progress was recorded

My late client was an influential wealthy businessman, an oil magnet here in Nigeria and he left behind a deposit of Forty two Million, Two Hundred Thousand United States Dollars only ($42,200,000.00usd) in his domiciliary bank account in a commercial bank here in Lagos. After the death of my client his bankers contacted me, as his Attorney to provide his next of kin who should inherit his fortune. The board of directors of his bank adopted a resolution and I was mandated to provide his next of kin for the payment of this money within 28 working days or forfeit the money to the bank as an abandoned property. The bankers had planned to invoke the abandoned property decree of 1996 to confiscate the funds after the expiration of the period given to me.

Despairing at the point of exhaustiveness, fortunately, I came across your name, to my utmost amazement, I discovered that you bear the same surname with my late client and coincidentally, you are nationals of the same country. Convinced that you may be linked with my late client or that you might provide clue to my search, I therefore, decided to contact with these facts before me because of the similarities.

By virtue of my closeness to the deceased and his immediate family, I am very much aware of my client financial standing and the bank account he operates. I have reasoned very professionally and I feel it will be legally proper to present you as the next of kin of my deceased client, so that you can be paid the funds left in his bank account, hence I contacted you. I

seek your consent to present you as the Next of Kin to the Deceased since you are at an advantage, bearing the same surname and equally from the same country, so that the proceeds of this Bank Account valued at $42.2 Million Dollars can be paid to you. We shall both share the funds. 55% to me and 40% to you, while 5% should be for Expenses or Tax as your Government may require, I shall assemble all the necessary Legal Documents that will be used to back up our claim.

All I require is your honest cooperation to enable us see this deal through. I guarantee that this will be executed under a legitimate arrangement that will protect you from any breach of law.

Please get in touch with me by email to enable us discuss further.

Best Regards

Barrister kevin Nworah

Subject: For Charity USA

Hello Micheal, This is to acknowledge receipt of your emails with thanks.

I am very happy with you for being direct and truthful to this matter and equally I am replying your message with the zeal you can be of immense help at this time to claim this money as soon as possible from bank where my respected late Mr.Adams Dell had the money lodged in.Being his solicitor, the bank had been contacting me, to present my late clients next of kin, of cause, I had made frantic effort to locate his relations who are not aware of this money. ironically, all effort my proved unsuccessful, which compelled me to contact you through the Internet.

I am very appreciative of your concern and will do every thing humanly and legally possible to transfer all the acurred benefits to your name as the next of kin to deceased under no legal risk. I would want to reassure you that the process of the this transaction will be legal. You dont have to fear or worry about any legal implication. Since you have indicated your interest to help claim this money out from the bank . I feel strongly indebted to my late client, to make sure that his assest and valuables left behind are not asted and forfeited to the bank. This mind pondering my thought informed my determination to recover his funds. In this regard, let us join hands together and claim this money from bank as soon as possible which I am convinced, it will not take us up to 10 working days by their time frame to pay any of my late clients next of kin the funds.

However, I will want you to send to me immediately, your telephone and fax numbers to enable me send to you the legal documents that are involved which i will secure with your name and in your favour from the Federal High Court of Justice here in Lagos.

The procedure is transparent and excellent. I have the capabilty as a lawyer to obtain the legal document within two working days. Firstly, I will swear an affidavit in the High Court of Justice in favour of you which will confer the right to me to obtain a letter of administration (Oath Without Will) from the Federal High Court of Justice here in Lagos in your name. This letter of administration is a legal document that gives you an exclusive legal right to claim the money as the heir to the deceased and confirms your status as the bonafide beneficiary of the deposited fund in the bank. This legal document also cover you anywhere, any place and no question will arise from your own bank or goverment about the money when transferred to you.

Finally, the letter of administration (Oath WithoutWill) and an application of claim on the said fund which I will write on your behalf will be submitted together to the management of bank for harmonization, approval and subsequent transfer of your fund into your bank account. Hence, the application of claim and the letter of administration (Oath Without Will) are submitted to the bank on your behalf, you will be recognised as the beneficiary of the funds and the bank will thereafter, be contacting you directly.

To facilitate the process of this transaction, urgently forward to me your telephone and fax numbers ,full name, contact address, age and marital status I would like you to call me after reading this mail for a brief discussion. If you are really dedicated to the success of this transaction you should make a point of duty to call me. My phone number is Tel: 234-1-7752825 and Fax no: 234 1 7598558. I will be expecting to hear from you. . I shall send to you all the legal documents that are involved in this transaction as soon as the are secured for your perusal. I am expecting to hear from you urgently

Best Regards

Dear Kevin,

thanks for the information. I look forward to the finalisation of the documents on your side.

I have already authorised the shipment of your laptop to be part of the shipment going to Abuja, Nigeria. Is that close to where you are? They told me it was the capital so I guess it is close. The people in the Shipping Department said that it is far easier to do it this way. The laptop has already laft our offices and is on its way to Nigeria. It will be too problematic to reverse the process now.

I will give you the details of the people you need to contact in Abuja to collect it. They will inform you where and when to collect it.

You seem to be too worried about your laptop. I can always send you another one or you can by a new one after our business.

I don't know what you are talking about with the numbers and accounts. What is the EFCC?

Regards,
Michael Dell

[I do call Kevin again. In a desperate and pathetic attempt to get his 5000 Naira back he says if I pay him back the 5000 Naira the original deal can still go ahead. I now tell him I am an FBI agent working with the Nigerian authorities and ask him to denounce his 419 activities. He asks me to put the phone down and then hangs up.]
