WHO ISN'T WHO

updated mar 1 2005

The '419' scammers pose as real politicians, cultural figures and bureaucrats.
This is often plainly a political dig.
They may mention news stories about their real counterparts, to make the story more convincing.

Suggestions for addition to the list are welcome.

... is the head of the relatively new Nigerian agency "Economic and Financial Crimes Commission". Their mission is to go after financial criminals, and it seems they are actually trying to do it.

CHUBA OKADIGBO

Former president of Nigeria's national senate (1999-2000). He was impeached over a corruption issue and had to step down from the presidency, but stayed in the Senate until 2003. Then he ran (unsuccessfully) for national vice president on the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) slate, but lost to the current president Obasanjo's People's Democratic Party (PDP). Okadigbo died in 2003. He had been teargassed at a rally a few days before. Maybe this is what "Mrs. Okadigbo" refers to below.

PETER ODILI

Real person. Governor of Rivers State in Nigeria.

Scamorama got a scam-o-gram from an "Odili", about laundering imaginary money, and referring us to a "Dr. Richard Foxx", r.foxx@tiscali.cz, [213.185.106.3], 0044-70 92807020. The mail had political touches for distraction value, relating to rivalry, intrigue and violence in Rivers State, and even threw in something about how Nigeria's oil should be used for the benefit of Nigerians.

CHARLES SOLUDIO

Governor of the Central Bank Of Nigeria

MARIAM ABACHA

The widow of former Nigerian President General Sani Abacha, and possibly the most impersonated human being on the planet, thanks to 419 scammers.

She and son Mohammed have been at odds with the current Nigerian government, which would really like back the money they claim the family stole and parked in European banks. The government dropped some charges in return for part of the money (billions of dollars are in dispute). It should fix a lot of those potholes in the Sagbama Express Road.

Other famous widows featured in 419 letters include Mrs Estrada and Mrs Marcos (she of the shoes), and Mrs Savimbi.
