THE TAO OF DUPE

From the twisted mind of Perez (they seek him here, they seek him there) comes a verbal duel with Tao Sakaita, yet another "son" of the late Jonas Savimbi:
I have another one, this time from Angola. (I must have "turkey" written all over me, I get a couple every week). This lad appears promising: he can't keep his own name straight throughout the first email, and sent me his picture (well, somebody's picture wearing a lot of gold) without much fuzz. I sent him the same pic of Fabio riding on a horse.

ORIGINAL SCAMMY LETTER

From: Tao S. Savimbi [mailto:artao@cedillo.org]
Sent: Thursday, August 01, 2002 12:30 PM
To: Kindly Contributor
Subject: Save My Family and Fortune

From Tao,

This letter may come to you as a suprise as we have not met, but it is a serious matter. I am d esperately in need of help.
I am Mr. Tao Sakaita son of the late rebel leader Jonas Savimbi of Angola who was killed on the 22nd of Febuary 2002 . I managed to get your contact details through the internet.
Time is of the importance and I was desperate
My late father, Jonas Savimbi was able to deposit some fund in Europe with a Security Company that he intended to make purchases with.
Our movements presently(including me) is restricted. We are forbidden to either travel abroad or out of our localities.
Right now the Government is trying to lay claim to some of his wealth by saying it was gained through arms smuggling and by my father's extended family and relations who want a share of his properties at any cost.

You can know more about my father by checking his profile at the URL below:
www.kwacha.com/edoc2.htm
Most of his wealth remain hidden, to even me. I being close to my father I happen to be in possesion of documents and information of some of the wealth.
v Presently, the US$100,000,000.00(110 million Euros) One Hundred Million Dollars cash my father transfered to Europe before his death for some purchases he intended to make is safe and is in a security firm. I have the passcode and the documents to the security firm. This is where I will need your help because at present i cant travel. And I want to act fast before the government finds out about the funds.
.I intend to communicate with you as regards this transaction on a satelite phone to avoid intervention by anybody.

Moreover, the political climate in Angola at the moment is so sensitive and unstable. With this password and information and power of attorney you will be able to proceed to the security firm. But you will also give me a guarantee first. When you are ready I will give you the information needed before you can get access to the fund you will then proceed to the security company where the funds will be given to you as payment either installmentally or depending on the advice of the security company.

YOUR CONFIDENTIALITY IN THIS TRANSACTION WILL BE NEEDED

Yours sincerely,

TAO S. SAVIMBI.

PEREZ: WELL IF IT'S ON A WEB SITE IT MUST BE TRUE

Hello, Mr Sambini

I have read your letter with great interest. I also checked the web site you mentioned, as well as other sites on the life of your late father, and everything appears to support your claims.

I am interested in your proposition, except for one little detail. You have 100 million dollars, and I can help you recover them before your government gets to it. That's fine and dandy, but what is in it for me? You make no mention of my reward for this transaction.

I am president and CEO of a large company, Associated Software Systems, which grew immensely during the dot-com boom of the last decade. I have a reputation and a good name to maintain. In order for me to risk it, I would need a very sizable incentive.

This is my offer: I will help you in whatever is necessary, even traveling to Europe or Angola, and will provide you with the guarantee that you require.

In exchange, I will receive 40 percent of the money plus expenses. I think it is reasonable, since I will be doing most of the work. Also, I would prefer to receive all my reward at once instead of installmentally, regardless of the security company's decision. We can collect your portion however you prefer.

Think about my offer and consult it with our lawyer if necessary. Please respond to this address indicating the modalities for the deal.

Sincerely,

Juan Perez Munoz de Baratta

Mr Perez,

Thank you for your prompt reply.

I have a satellite phone. My number is:
00873-762921845
fax: 00873-762921846

The best time to call is 10PM - Dawn Angola time. I am in a camp and I am not allowed to travel out of my area because the government is afraid that we might cause trouble or sell whatever remains of our father's assets.

I am impressed by your ability and your achivements. And it when things are opened. Where we will need to negotiate further will be on the percentage. Even though it is only me my mum and one other relation that is aware of the deposit.

After we have succesfully claimed it we would want to take care of all the family so they will not suffer and have to fight again. Also we will want to relocate and that is why we are unable at present because the government has seized almost everything. And our community will be rebuilt. Maybe through a foundation.

So after discussion with my people I will make offer of good percentage to you, but 40% is high. Also when you reach there you must endeavour to collect everything not just your own.

All future correspondence will be from my more confedential box :
tsa02@saldivar.org

Reply there and expect a mail from me by tomorrow

Thank you for your kind words. I also must congratulate you for running a well-equipped camp, with access to satellite phones and email. Your desire to help your people through a foundation also deserves praise. I see you are not just a selfish heir wanting to make a quick profit for yourself.

Given your philantropic purposes, tell your committee that my original request for 40 percent is negotiable. Discuss amongst yourselves and make me an offer. You'll find that I am a very reasonable person, so we should get along pretty well.

I expect your response

Dear Mr. Sambani,

I am afraid 20% will not be enough for me. I am a reasonable person but also a businessman. I need at least 30% of the total amount, plus expenses. This is my final offer. If you cannot convince your associates, you may have to look for another partner.

I expect your response in order to proceed with the documentation, your scanned photography, and other modalities.

What is the problem with your mother? Perhaps I could be of assistance: my cousin is the Chief Medical Proctologist of a major hospital in the area. We may be able to pull some strings and have her admitted here.

Mr. Perez,

Thank you for the concern shown for my mother. They say it is a tumour. That is why I will need part of this fund to fly her abroad on Humanitarian grounds.
It is like you are really a hard businessman. Okay we can go as high as 25%.

Also you did not include your phone number and fax. This is important for direct communicatiom. Once you agree to the percentage and send the letter of Guarantee back and your picture I will instruct our family lawyer to change some of the documents and effect a Power of Attorney and an agreement and also get in touch with the Company.

At this stage I have to be more careful. So use code 0077 when replying. Also at this stage I hope you know the company is based in Europe and I hope visa will not be a problem for you unlike for us. You should budget for about 3-5 working days and expenses.

Let me know your position asap, as you know time is no ones friend.

Subject: Re: Sa...

Dear T. 077,

I am sorry, but 30% is as low as I can go. I am not trying to take advantage of your situation: on the contrary, I am doing this because I sympathize with your plight. However, I am currently enjoying a comfortable retirement, and will only go back into business if the price is right. To show you that I am reasonable, I will include the expenses (air tickets, lawyer fees, etc) in my 30 percent. I hope you'll find this final offer acceptable.

I will send you the guarantee letter as soon as you agree to the percentage. As for the picture, you promised to send yours first. So, you show me yours and I will show you mine.

I must praise you for your idea of using a code. Shows that you are a smart, security-minded person. I will borrow your concept and also use a secret code of my own. Please use the code PI=31416 in further communications.

Traveling to Europe is not a problem for me. However, I must take care of certain passport matters in advance. I will explain it to you if we reach an agreement, since at this point we are not partners yet.

Give my sympathies to your mother. I have asked the pastor of my church, reverend Jim Jones, to say a special prayer for her in today's service.

Sincerely,

Subject: I am standing

Dear 007,

I did receive your message. Be patient, my friend. Remember that there is a time difference of several hours, and I get them in the middle of the night.

I am glad we have a deal, I was always sure we'd reach an agreement. To summarize: I will receive 30% of the 100,000,000.00 dollars, paid at once (not installmentally), and I will pay for expenses incurred.

Who is Tao Kaita? is it another name you are using? I am just having a hard time keeping track of all your names, email addresses, surnames, codes, and secret identities.

I saw your picture. I must compliment you again, you must be the best-dressed man ever to live in a refugee camp. I can see now that Sally Struthers had been lying to us all along, with her depictions of half-naked people and starving children living in squalor.

Here is my photograph. I did not have a formal one available like yours, but you can see me relaxing at my ranch.

My scanner just broke, I need to purchase a new one in order to send you my ID. You should have it within the next couple of days.

I have a question about the letter of guarantee: do you need me to just add my name to the bottom of it and email it back to you or do you need my actual signature in company letterhead? Either way is not a problem, I just need to know how to proceed.

What is in the second picture you sent me? Looks like somebody dancing in front of the chief, or something like that? I would love to know the details. Are you also in that picture?

Regards,

PI=31416

I almost lost this lad: this temper of mine is going to cost me a fortune one of these days. I wonder if there is anything I can say that will really piss off these people ...

Pi=31416,

I will be trying to check my mail twice daily from now on.

To clarify a few things.

1) the picture of me was taken some months before my present predicament which I explained.
2) the other picture is an official taken to impress upon outsiders that there are no sufferings here. A meeting was being held.
3) the tao kaita is short for tao sakaita which is my middle name as a form of disguise I did ity like that.
4) I was having problem logging into my website and as constant communicition is important I gave you another box. But my previous one is opening now. But I hate problems.
5) My access to phone is done all at night. Like I said from 10Pm Angola time.
6) Yes, the Agreement as will be specified in the Deed of Agreement which you will have to sign also is for 30% of the funds.
I will need you to send the letter of Agreement with your name and signature preferable as an attachment or fax.
I have gone through all the pains to prepare the Documents and now you seem to be slowing down. I will need your fax and phone numbers within the next 24 hours. Also the letter of Guarantee and your mailing address. No more no less.

Subject: RE: Did you receive my message?

Zero,

Let me get this straight... you don't want to continue our business because I look young for my age? this must be the most stupid reason I have heard in a long time.

I am 41 years old, as the birthdate in my driver's license shows. I can see from your picture and the rolls under your chin that you have never heard about a healthy lifestyle and keeping in shape. You are probably used to see either half-starved people in the refugee camps or morbidly obese chiefs with funny hats being carried by their subjects. I wonder which of these is in your future.

What about my being a CEO? Do CEOs have to look a certain way? My, my, you are certainly a peasant, and it shows. I have worked hard all my life to achieve my present status. I did not inherit a lot of wealth from my father, and certainly do not wear 2 Kgs of gold in each hand.

I will suggest that you take business seriously if you ever want to succeed in life. If you judge people by the way they look, you'll never get out of your camp.

I am going to give you one more chance to deal with me. I am a businessman, and I do not let personal offenses come before my work. That is how I have made my fortune. Let me know if you are man enough to put this behind you and work together. I seriously doubt that you'll find another partner with my resources and willingness to help.

I am currently in the process to obtain a secured phone line. The lines I have now are all open. After my divorce, my wife and her lawyer started spying on me, and they have decrypted all my encryptions and open my correspondence. Until then, this email account is the most secure way of communication.

0,

No problem. I can see now that I made the right decision. To tell you the truth, I wondered for a moment if you were a boy doing a man's job, but I made a mistake. Let's move on.

The boxes with the money look very impressive. It's a lot of cash you've got there!!! Again, I made the right decision as a businessman. What worries me, though, is the issue of security. Do you have all that cash at the camp? Is it is a safe place? Remember, 30% of it will belong to me soon!!!

You still have not told me anything about the modalities of our business. I don't know what will I need to do exactly, other than I may have to travel abroad. I would appreciate if you share some of those details with me.

I may not be able to travel abroad before a week or so. I need to exchange my passport for a new one, and it may take a few days. I thought I mentioned it to you briefly, but I was traveling with a Canadian passport. After the referendum that separated Quebec from the rest of Canada, we have been required to exchange our Canadian passports for new ones from the Republic of Quebec. Do not worry, though: we have no trouble traveling anywhere in Europe, same as US or Canadian residents.

Again, please brief me in the perfected modalities of our deal. I will really like to know the whole picture, and still feel like I am in the dark.

I have given you my personal data, sent you a copy of my drivers license, and disclosed confidential information to you. I only know your name, a few nicknames which you keep changing (I am not complaining, I understand your reasons), and a picture. I believe it is time you start trusting me too.

I am sorry to have to bring this to you after so much rapport between us. When you insisted on 30% it took a while but it was agreed upon. I can not use your ID to do something when I am in Africa. And God forbid that I would put myself through all this just to get your ID.

I wish you could come here and see that I would not want to stay here. But everything requires money. And the government has frozen everything. My Mum is getting sicker and we are still wasting time.

The funds are no longer here like I explained in my first mail so why are you asking me how are we managing to keep such money here.

As a CEO or business man it should not be too hard to arrange for a mobile phone or satellite for our business unless you are just delaying for time and you can not finance this trip.

So as a matter of principle if you can not get a phone and fax, then the deal is off. I have already revealed a lot to you but I would ask you as a gentleman not to reveal this transaction to anybody.

I will compensate you when I can find another partner that will fulfill the transaction and do according to agreement.

In the meantime, are you telling your sick mother that you have everything on hold because you don't have the phone number? That is, despite my multiple requests that you move forward and at least explain the modalities of our business as soon as possible? I hope your stubborness does not have any bad consequences. Good luck explaining to her that you don't want my help as a matter of principle, according to your own words.

My mistake about the funds, I just saw the picture and was really impressed with that amount of money. I would ask you where are they now, but you'll probably not answer me, since you are Mr. Secret.

I have plenty of fund to finance any trip I want to, so don't start on that road now. Remember, we are buddies now and have left insults behind us.

By the way, tell me more about you. Do you have a wife and kids? are all of you at the camp, or have you managed to send anybody to a safer place? I can imagine what you must be going through.

I expect you response

0,

Well, I hope I have proved my commitment to you.

Now it is your turn. As I told you, I am still in the dark about how this is going to work. You have not disclosed any details to me despite my many requests, and I don't like to be manipulated.

Please send me a message detailing all the perfected modalities for our business, as well as the exact role of the securities company in it.

You can tell your mother to relax. At least from my side, everything is being taken care of. I hope you start acting diligently too, since time is not in our side.

I am going to be out of the country next week, and I will have only ocassional access to my email. Please try to give me as much information before that. I need to attend to certain urgent family matters and I will also pick up my new passport as I mentioned to you.

Regards,

TAO: CAN WE TALK?

P,

Is your phone working now? Why do you have to travel somewhere at this crucial stage. Supposing something happens before you come back. You could have at least anticipated this. How long do you plan to stay. The Security company will be in a better position to explain everything. But like I indicated the company is in Europe in Holland.

You should try and see about doing this before you travel because I have contacted the company and the quicker everything is resolved the better. How can you travel without your passport anyway.

PEREZ: FAMILY FIRST

Subject: That is my business

0,

My family affairs take priority over everything else. I have no need to explain my personal business to you or anybody else.

Your argument about something happening is pretty silly: I could get hit by a truck while crossing the street, or you could die of starvation or disease in your camp. There's nothing we can do about it.

I will be back on September 1st, and as I told you, I am also going to pick up my new passport. I can travel freely between the US and Canada, but I will need it to go to Europe. I tought I had explained it to you long ago.

I am looking forward to hear from the security company. Hopefully they will do a better job at explaining things to me than you have. Like I told you, I do not like being left in the dark or pushed around like a puppet. I am willing to finish this deal, but your attitude is making it harder every time.

PEREZ: I DOUBT YOU

0,

I am starting to have serious concerns about your commitment to this business, as well as your ability to carry forward a transaction of this magnitude.

You question me because I need time to take care of my family's needs, and it takes you two days or more to answer to an email message. You still have not told me what is the next step, nor have you put me in touch with the securities company.

Remember, you are the one who contacted me to come out of my retirement and help you and your family. What kind of a son are you? I have offered medical assistance for you mother and you haven't even bothered to ask for details. If my mother was gravely ill, she would be my first priority.

Please respond with a firm commitment to our partnership. Otherwise, I wish you good luck. I am sure you'll find plenty of people with the time, the money, and the desire to help you.

TAO: DEMURRAGE!

Date: Thu, 22 Aug 2002 17:06:41 -0700
From: "tao kaita" tfeek@37.com

P,

Like I informed you earlier the document was ready. Unfortunately, which is good to have been discovered on time, there was a mistake made. So it had to be re-arranged.

Thank you for the offer for my Mother anyway. I asked you earlier if your fax was connected to the phone. I will make arrangements to fax the documents or mail them on Friday.

It seems there is a demurrage pending on the consignment. I will email you again once the documents have been sent.

Your patience is appreciated. So now everything will be in your hands.

PEREZ: THE PHONE THE MAIL THE FAX

Sounds good. It just worries me when you take two days before answering to an email. I am glad they discovered the mistake on time.

The phone I have purchased is a 4-bit DES encrypted mobile phone. I don't believe I can attach it to a fax machine. It may be best to email me the documents.

I talked to the phone company yesterday, they promised (again) that the line is going to be up this weekend. As you know, I am out next week, hopefully the problems will be fixed when I come back. The phone was expensive, by the way, but I guess it comes from my expenses, so you do not need to worry.

Send me the documents today if you can, so I can get a head start before leaving tomorrow.
