DUSTIN ARBITAGE, INVENTOR EXTRAORDINAIRE, TUSSLES WITH VIRGINIA AND DR. WILLIAMS MOMOH

Hi folks! Like many of you, I have this love/hate relationship with spam, and receive many a junk e-mail each day. And yet, I had to wait quite some time before a Nigerian scam letter finally plopped unceremoniously into my in-box. Once it did though, I wasted little time in setting up a fake account to respond from, and what follows is my hopefully humourous, albeit brief, initial stab at scam baiting.

All e-mail addresses, phone numbers, etc. have been supressed to protect the innocent (and the guilty).

Why does God always have to be involved in these scams? Aren't there any secular criminals out there? Oh well, it's comforting to know that if you do manage to get scammed, at least some of the money is going to a local church... or maybe not. Anyway, Dustin renders his services available forthwith...

Dear Virginia,

I am so very sorry to hear that your father died in such tragic circumstances. I hope he went quickly, and without much pain.

But now down to business... yes, I believe that I'm in a position to assist you, but before I can give you details of my bank account and so on, I need to establish a certain level of trust in you.

So, could you please send me a photo of yourself, and perhaps provide me with a few more details (where you live, names of family members who live with you, etc.). Once a level of trust has been established between us, I'm sure we can do business.

Likewise, if you require any more details concerning myself, please feel free to ask and I shall furnish them if possible.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours Sincerely,
Dustin Arbitrage

Might as well put the lad to work straight away.

1) Photo of some African political figure
2) Alleged photo of father's funeral with Associated Press sidebar still intact
3) A photo of a pretty African girl - probably the lad's sister or girlfriend, or maybe just an anonymous photo lifted from the Web?

In any event, I became busy myself at that time, and decided to let "Virginia" stew for a few days. I got one e-mail a day, each increasingly more 'urgent' than the last. Below is the fourth of these e-mails...

Virginia, hi again!

Sorry that I had not responded to your last few e-mails, but I was called away suddenly on business last week. For once I did not bring my laptop computer, as I took some holidays on the weekend and wanted to forget about work for a while. Thus, I could not read my e-mail.

Anyway... thank you for the photos. You are such an attractive girl. It will be a pleasure doing (business with) you! I realize now that you are probably in a hurry to get this money transferred, and again I apologize for the delay. By the way, 15% is a very generous commission. Thank you!

But I suppose I should tell you a bit more about myself before we take the plunge, so to speak. I'm something of a famous inventor in the field of electronics, best known for my work in developing the Referential Stasis Generator. You see, I come from a long line of inventors, my grandfather being the inventor of the Brownian Capacitor. I'm enclosing a photo of myself taken at a recent inventor's award ceremony.

And now that private phone number you requested... I'd better not give you my home number, because I prefer that my wife not become involved in this transaction. I suppose it's best if you call me at work. I live on the east coast of the USA, so please take the time difference into consideration when calling. The number is:

[real phone and fax numbers of a poor, unsuspecting architectural firm somewhere in NJ, USA]

Please ask for my secretary, Gina Davis (Gina is pronounced as 'jeena').

I look forward to a fruitful business transaction.

Sincerely,
Dustin Arbitrage

Heh heh. Didn't want to take a chance by furnishing them with the correct spelling of Geena's name. After all, the lads presumably can search the Web too!

Meanwhile, I attached a photo of Dustin, in reality that of a distinguished yet relatively unknown Irish actor. Dustin, you sure are a handsome devil, gotta hand you that.

Dear Dustin Arbitrage,

Good day to you,

It is just to inform you that I called the number you gave to me today and it is unfortunately that the person I got on phone told me that is a wrong number I even ask of your secretary, Gina Davis (Jeena) and the person I got on line told me that there is no body anwsering such name.So even my lawyer told me that he called your line and they told him thesame thing.

Secondly, what is happenning? or are you taking this transaction as a joke? or are you realy sure that you want to assist me in this transaction? Please I need to hear from you so that we should proceed with out any further delay.Provide to me your real telephone numbers were I can reach you easily and make sure that you include your mobile numbers for an easy communication and confidentiality of this our transaction.

Please I need your urgent response as soon as you recieve this my message.

Thanks and God bless us.

Virginia

Uh oh, they're becoming quite indignant. I suppose I could suggest that we continue this charade via e-mail only, but they do seem suspicious. Maybe they've been baited a few times already? Ah heck, I'm tiring of this. Time to come 'clean'...

"Virginia", hi,

Yes, I'm afraid I am taking this transaction as a joke :-) You see, I presumed from the very start that you were probably some big, bald arsehole sitting in a cybercafe somewhere in Lagos. Pretty close to the truth, eh? I discovered a copy of a letter very similar to yours, with just a few details changed. I've included it below. Next time, try to come up with something a little more original, and you might even catch a real mugu then!

At least I hope you wasted a bit of your money on those long distance calls... but then, your phone is probably a stolen one too.

Bye forever, and regards to Dr. Momoh.

LARRY LAMIDO MOORE.

Oh well, that's that... I was expecting a parting shot back from the lad, but I haven't got a response in about 3 days, and have decided to let the sleeping dog lie. I suppose the experienced scammers like this one have learned to take rejection as a matter of course. Just forget about it and move on to the next potential victim.

*Sigh* Next time I won't be so quick to give out a phone number, if at all. Can probably keep them on the hook longer that way.
